About Therapy

People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Underlying this is that something isn't right, isn't working like it could, or is causing more than just a passing distress. Chances are, you are here because you, or someone you know, may be struggling with the challenges that life can throw at us, and you want to do something about it. Well done on taking this difficult first step!

The therapy I offer can be broadly put into two camps:

Humanistic Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I believe through experience that the two forms of therapy complement each other really well, which is why I prefer to work with them both. However, it'd be entirely your choice if you prefer to work one way over the other.

Humanistic Counselling

Broadly speaking, this approach believes that the individual has within themselves the tools they need for personal growth, and that no matter how difficult life can be, we are like plants throwing out shoots to the light, even when we are surrounded in darkness. The role of the therapist is to work with the individual, supporting them in a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Take a look at this article on the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy website for a more in-depth explanation:

What is Humanistic therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

This approach focuses on our thinking and behavioural patterns and how they interact with our emotions and our sense of well-being. By learning to challenge our ingrained thinking and behavioural habits, we learn new ways to cope with the difficulties of life. In my experience, it's particularly helpful in working through different types of anxiety disorders and can play a helpful role when working through depression.
